How to build your rotation
- Choose "Build my own pattern…" in the schedule menu (it's already selected on this page).
- Add blocks in order, one block per run of the same shift: for "2 days, 2 off, 3 nights, 2 off", add Days (2), Off (2), Nights (3), Off (2). Use − and + to set each block's length.
- Check the cycle summary. It shows how long your cycle is and whether it divides evenly into crews that cover every shift exactly once.
- Set your shift times under "Shift times" if they differ from the defaults: 12-hour days and nights, or 8-hour days, evenings and nights when your rotation includes evening shifts; 24-hour shifts start at 7 am.
- Anchor it: pick a date you remember and tap the block you were on. The calendar lines everything up from there.
Examples
Common rotations you can build, written in the short form the builder uses (D = day, S = evening, N = night, F = 24-hour, O = off):
D2 O2 N3 O22 days, 2 off, 3 nights, 2 offD4 O4 N4 O44 days, 4 off, 4 nights, 4 offD5 O2 S5 O2 N5 O25 days, 2 off, 5 evenings, 2 off, 5 nights, 2 offN7 O77 nights, 7 off (a "7 on 7 off" rotation)F1 O1 F1 O5Two 24-hour shifts with a day between, then 5 off
Many common rotations already have their own page with the details filled in: try Pitman, DuPont, Kelly or 4 on 4 off before building from scratch.
Questions
Can I build a rotation that changes shift lengths?
Each shift type (day, evening, night, 24-hour) has one start time and length per schedule, which you set under "Shift times". So a rotation of 12-hour days and 8-hour evenings works. Two different day-shift lengths in one rotation isn't supported yet.
What does "crews cover every shift exactly once" mean?
For a 24/7 operation, the calendar checks whether copies of your rotation, started a few days apart, can staff every shift with no gaps and no doubling. If they can, it sets up the crews automatically, so you can compare yourself with other crews. If not, it still works for your own calendar.
Can I share or save a custom schedule?
Yes. Custom schedules are saved on your device like any other, and the Share button makes a link that includes your rotation.
How long can a custom cycle be?
Up to 120 days, which covers every common rotation we know of, including long "slow rotation" schedules.
