How the Continental schedule works
A continental crew works a 28-day cycle in three short blocks: 2 days, 2 evenings, 3 nights, 2 off; 2 days, 3 evenings, 2 nights, 2 off; 3 days, 2 evenings, 2 nights, 3 off. Each block moves forward from day to evening to night, which many sleep researchers consider easier than rotating backward.
With 8-hour shifts, three shifts cover every 24 hours. Four crews, each a week apart, mean that every day one crew is on days, one on evenings, one on nights and one is off.
You work 21 shifts every 28 days, an average of 42 hours a week. The longest work stretch is 7 days in a row. The breaks are short (2 or 3 days), but they come every week.

"Continental" and 2-2-3
The name means a rotation for continuous, around-the-clock work. You may also hear "continental 2-2-3" for the 12-hour 2-2-3 schedule, or "2-3-2" for the same blocks counted differently. This page covers the classic 8-hour version.
Pros and cons
What people like
- Shorter 8-hour shifts.
- Days off every single week.
- Forward rotation (day → evening → night) is gentler on sleep.
- Short night blocks of only 2–3 nights.
What's hard
- Up to 7 shifts in a row.
- Shifts change every few days, so your routine keeps changing.
- Only about one weekend in four is fully off.
- More trips to work than 12-hour schedules (21 shifts vs. 14 every 4 weeks).
Who uses the Continental schedule
Variations
- Classic 28-day continental
- The version in this calendar: 2-2-3 style blocks of 8-hour shifts.
- Fast continental (2-2-2)
- Two of each shift, then two off, in an 8-day cycle. Build it with the custom builder as D2 S2 N2 O2 (it uses 8-hour shifts automatically when a rotation includes evenings).
- Slow continental
- Longer blocks of 5–7 days on each shift. Build yours with the custom builder.
Frequently asked questions
What is a continental shift pattern?
A continental shift pattern is a rotating schedule that uses four crews and three 8-hour shifts (day, evening and night) to staff an operation around the clock. Crews rotate forward through the shifts in short 2–3 day blocks over a 28-day cycle.
How many hours a week is a continental shift pattern?
An average of 42 hours: 21 eight-hour shifts every 4 weeks. Individual weeks range from 32 to 56 hours.
How many days in a row do you work on a continental rota?
Up to 7 days in a row, followed by 2 or 3 days off.
What is the difference between continental and DuPont?
Continental uses 8-hour shifts and three shift types, with short breaks every week. The DuPont schedule uses 12-hour shifts and two shift types, with fewer workdays and a full week off every four weeks.
Why rotate forward from days to evenings to nights?
Moving your start time later is generally easier for your body clock than moving it earlier, the same way flying west tends to be easier than flying east. Forward rotation follows that natural direction.
